The UK government says it is preparing legislation to force banks to stop shutting down and refusing customers because of their political views. Ideological blacklisting should be able to lead to revoked banking licenses.
The background is that Nigel Farage, former party leader of the Brexit party Ukip, had his accounts suspended by the bank Coutts.
A document from the British bank shows that the reason for the suspension is entirely because Coutts believes that Farage does not have sufficiently politically correct “values”.
Nigel Farage has tried to open new accounts in ten other banks, but has been refused. His family members have also had their accounts suspended and refused to open new ones.
Similar measures have affected opposition figures in Sweden – for example, Fria Tider’s founder Widar Nord, who had his private Swedbank account suspended.
The government in Great Britain is reacting to what happened to Farage and says it wants to introduce new laws against the banks’ political persecution. Legislation is being prepared which means that banks that blacklist customers for political reasons will risk having their licenses revoked, The Guardian reports.
Nigel Farage hailed the announcement, calling it “one of the quickest interventions I’ve seen from a government in many, many years”.
