Lord Jacob Rothschild, the renowned financier and member of the esteemed Rothschild banking family, has passed away at the age of 87, as confirmed by his family. Lord Rothschild, a prominent figure in both finance and the arts, began his career in the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, in 1963. Notably, he co-founded the J Rothschild Assurance Group, now known as St James’s Place, in 1980 alongside Sir Mark Weinberg.
Throughout his illustrious career, Lord Rothschild held key positions such as deputy chairman at the then-BSkyB Television and chairman of trustees at The National Gallery. He played a pivotal role in the arts world, serving as chairman of trustees of the National Gallery from 1985 to 1991 and chairman of the National Heritage Memorial Fund from 1992 to 1998.
Lord Rothschild’s philanthropic endeavors extended to his role as chairman of the Rothschild Foundation, managing the family’s philanthropic portfolio. The Rothschild family, with an estimated fortune of around £82 million, is recognized for its significant contributions to Jewish causes, education, and the arts. Lord Rothschild will be laid to rest in accordance with Jewish customs, with a small family ceremony, while a memorial to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
The Rothschild Foundation acknowledged Lord Rothschild’s profound impact on various aspects of British life and confirmed that his daughter, Hannah, would succeed him as chair of the foundation. Despite the loss, the family remains committed to continuing Lord Rothschild’s legacy and supporting the foundation he loved and endowed.
Lord Jacob Rothschild, also known as Nathaniel Charles (Jacob), 4th Lord Rothschild, received several accolades during his lifetime, including being appointed a Member of the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 and receiving the Prince of Wales Medal for Arts Philanthropy in 2013.
