Police Have Called In Russian Lawmakers Who Wanted Putin to Face Treason Charges

Police in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, have summoned seven MPs after they urged that President Vladimir Putin be charged with high treason for his decision to start the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by the State Duma, the lower house of parliament.

The seven MPs from the Smolny municipal district of St. Petersburg were issued subpoenas late on September 8 instructing them to appear at the police station the next day to complete protocols on a charge of defaming the Russian military forces.

The organization demanded that Putin be removed from office in a formal letter to the State Duma on September 7 because, in their view, the protracted conflict has compromised Russia’s security.

The invasion, according to the letter, resulted in the deaths of Russian soldiers which are much needed in the labor sector, brain drain of Russians who emigrated to other countries, harmed the nation’s economy and living standards for its population, caused NATO to expand to Sweden and Finland, and militarized Ukraine even more with the aid of other countries.

The letter was delivered to the State Duma’s five party leaders as well as the Russian Security Council.

In an effort to dominate the narrative around its conflict in Ukraine, which began in late February, the Kremlin enacted a bill in early March that mandates hefty prison sentences for disseminating “deliberately false information” regarding Russian military activities.

A maximum sentence of up to three years in jail is imposed for “making appeals against the deployment of Russian military to preserve Russia’s interests” or “for discrediting such usage.”

Sanctions on Russia are subject to the same clause.
