The UK Department of Health recently announced that it would loosen hygiene rules for Muslim and Sikh doctors and nurses. From now on, Muslim female staff will not need to wash their hands before procedures as it compromises their modesty. Instead, they will have the admittedly less sanitary option of wearing disposable plastic over-sleeves.
Acknowledging the danger of microbes and death, a Department of Health spokesman said, “The guidance is intended to . . . balance infection control measures with cultural beliefs.” But, believe it or not, from a culturist perspective, the death of some patients is not the main cause for concern that this policy elicits.
The most dangerous problem is that this policy encodes multiculturalism not culturism. Whereas culturism acknowledges that England has a majority culture to protect and promote, this multiculturalist policy implicitly says that England has no core culture. It says that the nation can be whatever pressure groups decide it is. It, therefore, officially ends the dominance of English culture in England.
If you think this is hyperbole, consider the decision’s potential impact on schools. If we are going to implement policies that recognize and give legal standing to balkanize our culture, we must think it through to such a broader societal impact. This legal precedent may require us to set up schools in which Islamic teachings are taught. If that seems extreme, keep in mind that multiculturalism has currently made it nearly a firing offense to criticize Islam in our schools.
When we encode multiculturalist school policy, we have a recursive loop of disaster. When we cannot criticize Islam, we cannot teach that much of Western history has been about fighting Islam. We must erase the concept that our defending Europe against Islamic invasion led the way to the Enlightenment and, ultimately, to our political freedoms. And when our school children are taught not to value our Western culture, they will not feel any sense of pride, have reasons to defend the civic virtues that make England strong, or possess a desire to protect their homeland.
Islam has been at war with the West nearly continuously since its inception. Wherever it takes over it imposes a ruthless theocracy that smothers the freedoms we hold dear. We cannot protect the West with policies that say Islam is equal to our civilization. Culture is not metaphysical. It exists in space and people. Everywhere Islam has legal standing and is practiced is a space where English culture does not exist and is not practiced. It means the territory of defending Western values has shrunk and that believing in Islamic values has grown. The hospitals are now becoming Islamic.
England has a culture. To survive, England must set up culturist policy that affirms that this is English land with Western practices. We must tell people that our schools will teach the glories of the European defense against Islam and the contribution philosophers such as John Locke made to creating the Western concept of rights. Our streets must not become areas where women must conform to Muslim customs. Just as Saudi Arabia has an Islamic culture and protects it, England has a culture and a right to protect it. They still have to wash their hands, but they are now allowed to wear long disposable sleeves instead of short sleeves. The “not having to wash” part is a lie. As with any other group of people, there are plenty of _real_ reasons to like or dislike them. No need to make up new ones.

im irish and im muslim, ive nevered forced my ways on people or expected them to make exceptions for me and i get so anooyed when i see those strict “tent” wearing women or the big bushy bearded muslim guys, im freaked out by them so i dont see why non muslims arent. if they want to come and work in the eu then they have to make some adjustments and changes or else go back to their countries and live as strictly as they want, after all when non muslims go to an arab country they have to follow the countries laws so why should it be any different when muslims come to the western countries.

I suggest the author of this article researches the history of Europe-Middle East relations a bit more thoroughly. The historical references used sound like history taught in a authoritarian regime propaganda. The truth is the West have been the aggressors as often if not more often than the East, Crussades being the best example, and a lot of modern knowledge rooted in antique has been carried to out times by the muslim nations when Christianity tried to destroy ancient Greece and Rome legacy as “pagan”. seriously, they are cleaning “down there” then ya think. in order to pray you haf to be clean, so men and women would have to wash down there after using the toilet with water and soap. not to mention its manditory to preform the purification washing before prayer which includes washing hands, arms, feet, ears and face. now there are like 5 prayers a day so if your doing that wash routine 5 times a day its safe to say their bodies are clean. I fail to see how washing your hands can or could interfere with anyones faith? Doesn’t the muslim faith have a lot to do with being clean and keeping clean? And I totally agree and individual that is working within the medical profession should not have the view that working in the environment that they work in should require any sacrifices pertaining to safety. I work as a travel agent for several cruise lines and failure of people to wash their hands on cruise ships can potentially spread Norovirus which has the potential to make hundreds of people ill and can even cause death! I would worry to think what the spread of bacteria could cause in a medical environment where people are already ill and could have severely lowered immune systems. Absolutely ridiculous.
OMG! I am so glad I live in Canada. Here it doesn’t matter what your background is – if you are a doctor or nurse – you must wash your hands before touching a patient! How totally criminal is that!? If they have the alternative of using disposable gloves, then what’s the problem? I can understand that it’s frustrating that we have to keep changing our policies to accommodate other cultures but if they’re not compromising safety and hygiene then you’re practically complaining that Muslims are more comfortable in this country now.
It is a big deal. I’ve worked in a hospital in the US for 24 years. There are many germs and bacteria that can penetrate through gloves and gloves are not sufficient. Hand washing after removing gloves is the standard of care. Funny, if this story is true….someone’s “modesty”; who’s is getting paid to take care of sick people is more important than the actual people they’re getting money to take care of! Not only does this affect the UK but there are so many “super” bugs in hospitals and in the community now that it will be only a matter of time before there are more and more antibiotic resistant bugs traveling across the pond to other countries, i.e. SARS and Avian flu etc. If their modesty means more, than they should only work in Sikh and Muslem hospitals and keep the bugs within their own communities who share their modesty beliefs. It is medically unethical to partake in medical practices that you know are not safe and that you are willingly submitting innocent lives to because of your personal religious beliefs. There are plenty of times that I would love to be able to end a patient’s suffering but until assisted suicide becomes legal and within the scope of our every day medical practices, I can’t just do it because of my personal and religious beliefs. Knowingly NOT practicing good safe medicine is just as much as crime and assisted suicide. The fact that the UK health department feels that they should “compromise” their standard of safe medical practices should be extremely disconcerting for anyone there. What next, no masks in the OR because it may mess up a practioner’s hair and disturb their level of comfort???? Come on people, do what’s right and safe! One or more groups’ modesty and religious beliefs should not get in the way of an entire nation’s, not to mention other country’s medical practices. Making accommodations for prayers etc and uniform allowances for religious beliefs is understandable, but putting each and every patient not to mention all other care givers at risk is absolutely insane, regardless of what religion it is!

actually, Balkanize is not a racist term and applies to both the political and cultural realities of the Balkan region, specifically, that there is no integration, lots of nationalism, and thus, many small states that do no get along, as well as many states that struggle to maintain internal order.
Also, the school system in America ins’t either the best, or the worst in the world. It has some of the highest highs, and some of the most mediocre middle for any developed nation. Despite the mediocrity in the middle, the upper end of American education is second to none – the problem is that we are a sink or swim sort of place, and many are sinking… that doesn’t mean our swimmers don’t blow others out of the water….

I do not believe that this article is truthful. I work in frontline nursing in a UK hospital and would expect any nurse not following correct hand washing protocol to be disciplined

Funny this. I have family who work for the NHS and they have never mentioned this. Also my Islamic nurses had no bother washing their hands when providing my chemotherapy. So, how can you perform patient-contact-required nursing interventions without “violating” your modesty? I am really curious about this. I am not being sarcastic or mean. Same goes for doctors. How can you actually do an exam on a patient without “violating” your modesty? Does this apply to both men and women nurses and doctors? Or is it just women?
This also makes me wonder if I should make sure I am not seeing a woman nurse or doctor of these religions – not because I disagree with their religion but because I am not sure they are washing their hands and would prefer a provider that does wash their hands between patient contacts.
