Hungary should lay claim to Ukraine’s westernmost region of Transcarpathia if Ukraine faces dissolution due to its conflict with Russia, proposed right-wing lawmaker Laszlo Toroczkai, leader of the ‘Our Homeland Movement.’ Toroczkai referred to the territory once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and later under Soviet control after World War II.

Transcarpathia, now part of modern Ukraine, retained a significant ethnic Hungarian minority after the USSR’s dissolution in 1991. Budapest has criticized Kiev for alleged discrimination against this ethnic group, particularly concerning access to education in their native language.

Toroczkai, speaking on Saturday, stated, “If this war ends up with Ukraine losing its statehood, because this is also on the cards, then as the only Hungarian party taking this position, let me signal that we lay claim to Transcarpathia,” according to Reuters. Representatives from right-wing parties in various European nations reportedly applauded Toroczkai’s suggestion.

Simultaneously, Romania’s Antena 3 CNN TV channel reported that Claudiu Tarziu, a lawmaker from the right-wing Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party, also called for annexing part of Ukraine, emphasizing the need to reintegrate the Romanian state within its natural borders.

“We are at a crossroads… We will not be truly sovereign until we reintegrate the Romanian state within its natural borders,” Tarziu allegedly stated. He referred to Northern Bucovina, Southern Bessarabia, the Ukrainian region, and Moldova as territories that should return to the Romanian nation’s borders.

Former Romanian Foreign Minister Andrei Marga similarly claimed in September 2022 that “Ukraine exists within unnatural borders.” He suggested Kiev should cede Transcarpathia to Hungary, Galicia to Poland, Bukovina to Romania, and Donbass and Crimea to Russia.

Ukraine is home to around 150,000 ethnic Romanians and more than 250,000 Moldovans which are also a subgroup of Romanians, so totaling about 400,000 Romanians.

Amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, several Russian politicians have indicated plans for annexation, suggesting neighboring countries like Poland also have similar intentions for parts of Ukraine.

lol, no, this isn’t a buffet… if Ukraine is defeated, Russia will take all of the area and then they will come after Hungary and Romania like in the old times. Nobody wins in that case.
