Reducing immigration has outwardly been a profile issue for the UK government. But at the same time, net immigration to the country has increased sharply and is now greater than ever, reports The Telegraph.
Net migration to the UK will reach 745,000 this year, according to the statistics agency ONS.
This has contributed to the biggest annual increase in population in England and Wales since 1962, a peak year for baby boomers. Then population growth was due to a high number of births among British women, not third world immigration.
The Conservative government has put a lot of weight on its promises to stop illegal immigration. In a manifesto in 2019, the government pledged to bring total net migration down from its current level of 226,000.
The New Conservatives, a parliamentary group of more than 20 Conservative MPs, said in a statement that the increase in net migration represented an “existential threat” to the party and called for an emergency package of measures to reduce the influx.
“The word ‘existential’ has been thrown around a lot recently, but now it really is win or lose for our party. Every one of us was there to make the promise to the voters. We don’t believe that such promises can be ignored.”
