Johanna Leshem Jansson, 20, and Maja Hellman, 18, are sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Tove, 21.
Tove was murdered after a night out in Vetlanda last October.
Johanna Leshem Jansson and Maja Hellman have, according to the district court, been guilty of murder, grave breach of privacy and damage.
With regard to the prosecution for murder, the district court has found that one of the accused women acted with intent and the other with conscious intent. However, the district court has decided the penalty for both to life imprisonment.
According to the court, Johanna Leshem Jansson sat on Tove’s body and strangled her, while Maja Hellman held Tove’s arms.
“The decisive evidence has primarily been the information from the coroner who clearly explained that the cause of death was suffocation by strangulation and also clarified the different phases that are relevant in a strangulation and with what force manual strangulation must have taken place based on the damage picture that was on the killed the woman’s neck. According to the district court, there was no room for any other cause of death,” writes Eksjö district court.
Furthermore, the testimony of a neighbor has been central to clarifying the specific circumstances at exactly the time when, according to the district court’s judgment, Tove was killed.
Since the investigation otherwise confirms the information provided by one woman that the other woman held the dead woman’s hands in connection with the strangulation, the district court has given credence to this information.
The technical investigation carried out by the police, especially with regard to the question of how the defendants moved during the course of events, has also had great significance for the district court’s conclusion.
The District Court considers that the breach of grave peace is serious and alone has a significant punitive value of its own.
Maja Hellman must pay a total of SEK 650,000 in damages to five of Tove’s close relatives. Johanna Leshem Jansson is sentenced to pay just over half a million kroner to the same people.
– I note that the district court follows my line and sentences the two women to life imprisonment for murder and grave breach of privacy. It is satisfactory that we get a clear verdict where the district court shares my assessment that both should be held responsible, says prosecutor Adam Rullman in a press release.
