Strong earthquakes that cause thousands of structures to collapse in both nations result in 1,541 confirmed deaths in Turkey and another 810 reported in Syria, according to Turkish officials. Early on Monday, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in southeast Turkey was followed by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake and multiple aftershocks.
According to the most recent statistics made public by the nation’s authorities, a strong earthquake that struck Turkey on Monday morning has claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people and injured more than 7,000 others.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) of Turkey claimed that 1,121 people have died, with deaths reported in numerous districts.
According to the organization, 7,634 people were injured throughout the provinces, and at least 2,834 structures were damaged.
Additionally, Yunus Sezer, president of AFAD, stated that “there have been 105 aftershocks so far.”
Despite the strong jolts, the AFAD highlighted that there is now no tsunami threat that might harm Turkey’s Eastern Mediterranean.
Local authorities “have deployed all their means,” according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who also said that officials from eleven other provinces were also participating in the response operations.
He said that efforts to find anyone still trapped beneath the debris had been prioritized over search and rescue operations. According to Erdogan, 9,000 individuals are active in these initiatives overall, and that figure is continually rising.
He called it “the worst calamity since the Erzincan earthquake” in 1939, which is believed to have killed 32,000 people and wounded 100,000.
The tragedy has also spread to Syria’s neighbor; according to the health ministry there, more than 1,000 people have been injured and the death toll there has topped 300 in a number of districts.
