According to sources cited by The Times on Friday, the US has secretly given Ukraine permission to carry out long-range strikes on targets inside of Russian territory. In light of its decreasing fear that such assaults may exacerbate the conflict, the Pentagon appears to have revised its position on the subject.
A US defense official told the publication that the Pentagon is “no longer telling Kiev not to strike the Russians [in Russia or Crimea].”
“We are unable to direct them. He added that Washington merely required Kiev to abide by international law and the Geneva Conventions while deploying US-supplied weaponry. “It’s up to them how they use their weapons,” he said.
According to the source, the Pentagon has updated its assessment of the dangers related to the war in Ukraine, particularly in regards to the possibility that arming Kiev might lead to a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia.
The math has altered because of the “brutality the Ukrainians are being subjected to by the Russians,” a US official told the site. “We’re still using the same escalatory calculations but the fear of escalation has shifted from the beginning.”
In light of this, reports claim that Pentagon officials are now “seriously” debating Ukraine’s demands for long-range weaponry that might be used to launch attacks deep within Russia. A senior US defense official told The Times that “nothing is off the table.”
According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, Ukraine used multiple “Soviet-made” drones earlier this month to assault two Russian air bases in the Ryazan and Saratov areas, both of which are hundreds of kilometers from territory controlled by Kiev. Three military men were “fatally injured” during the attack, and four more were brought to the hospital.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Tuesday that Washington had “neither urged nor permitted the Ukrainians to strike inside of Russia” in the wake of the assault.
The information comes as Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba asserted on Thursday that while Kiev and Washington have an understanding that Ukrainian forces won’t assault most of Russian territory using US-supplied weaponry, this agreement does not extend to Crimea.
In September, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned the US that, should it provide Kiev with long-range weapons, this would cross a “red line” and make America “a direct party to the conflict.”
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, warned the US in September that giving Kiev long-range weaponry would cross a “red line” and turn the US into “a direct party to the conflict.”
