Vladimir Putin faced a significant setback as a drone attack targeted a military airfield in Russia, reportedly destroying two TU-22M3 long-range bombers at the Shaykovka air base in the Kaluga region. Situated about 200km from the Ukrainian border, the air base houses Russia’s 52nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment, known for deploying TU-22M3 bombers equipped with Kh-22 missiles, extensively used in the conflict in Ukraine.
While the Ukrainian media outlet Lb.ua claimed that two bombers were wiped out in the attack, Russian authorities attempted to downplay the incident. Kaluga’s regional governor, Vladislav Shapsha, confirmed the drone attack but insisted that there was no significant damage, asserting that the airfield infrastructure and equipment were unharmed.
Simultaneously, a shootout occurred between Federal Security Service (FSB) agents and four unidentified individuals in the Kursk region of Russia, bordering Ukraine. The assailants, dressed in camouflage uniforms and carrying backpacks, engaged in gunfire with FSB officers before escaping into nearby woods. A manhunt is underway to locate the attackers.
In a separate blow to Putin’s war campaign in Ukraine, a section of the Kerch bridge, a vital supply line linking Crimea with mainland Russia, collapsed into the sea after a massive explosion. The bridge serves as a crucial route for Russia’s southern army, currently facing pressure from a Ukrainian counteroffensive. While Ukraine did not claim direct responsibility for the explosion, an adviser to President Zelensky suggested it marked “the beginning” of actions aimed at reclaiming occupied territories.
Mikhail Podolyak, in a tweet, emphasized the need to destroy illegal elements, recover stolen assets for Ukraine, and expel Russia from occupied territories. The incidents underscore the escalating tensions and the evolving dynamics in the conflict, with both military and strategic implications for the region.
