A British girl from Cumbria recently appeared in court after being charged with perverting the course of justice when she told authorities that she had been drugged and sexually assaulted by members of an “Asian” grooming gang.
In several posts on social media in 2018 and 2019, 19-year-old Eleanor Williams, from Barrow-in-Furness, claimed that Pakistani men had beaten, drugged, and trafficked her for sex throughout the north of England. Williams prompted widespread outrage when she posted several gruesome photographs which showed horrendous bruising, scratches, and burn marks all over her body, The Daily Mail reports.
Interestingly enough, however, following a year-long review of William’s claims, the only charges filed in the case were against the 19-year-old girl herself.
And if the story wasn’t bizarre enough already, Williams was arrested again on May 20th for “breaching her bail conditions” after she took to social media again and continued the claims. Again, she posted pictures of burns, bruises, and scratches all over her body, claiming that the “Asian” gang had kidnapped her, placed her in a vehicle, and tortured her because she’s in debt for not having gone to parties for seven weeks during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Cumbria Police, in a statement, said: “Cumbria Constabulary can confirm that a 19-year-old woman, from Barrow-in-Furness, is subject of ongoing criminal proceedings. She was charged with seven counts of perverting the course of justice on 26th March 2020 and was released on bail. She has subsequently been arrested on May 20 for breach of her bail conditions and has been remanded in custody, court date to be notified.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Dean Holden, responding to people’s concern about William’s worrying social media posts, said that her allegations were taken seriously and investigated thoroughly but ultimately couldn’t be corroborated.
Holden, however, did not mention how the police department came to the conclusion that William’s had perverted the course of justice.
“What I would say is, when the question is asked, ‘Is there an organised gang of Asian men in Barrow conducting abuse or other exploitation against individuals?’ Our investigation has shown that has not been corroborated or otherwise evidenced,” the police chief said.
