A British court has sentenced Manish Shah, a doctor for the National Health Service (NHS), to life in prison with a minimum fifteen-year sentence after he was convicted of sexually assaulting dozens of his female patients.
Shah, who worked as a General Practitioner at the practice in the borough of Havering in East London, was born overseas and speaks Hindi and Gujarati. The 47-year-old was found guilty of nine counts of sexual assault and 16 counts of sexual assault by penetration by Barkingside Magistrates’ Court in December of 2019, Breitbart London reports.
The Barkingside Magistrates’ Court also convicted the Indian doctor of 65 offences of sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by touching in a separate trial in December of 2018, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.
The court found that Shah, for his own sexual gratification, pushed victims – typically young females aged between 15 and 32 – into “regular breast and vaginal examinations when there was no clinical need”.
“Shah was a long-serving doctor who was well-known in the community and trusted and liked by his patients, many who had him as their GP for many years. The judge rightly described him as a “master of deception,” Detective Superintendent Tara McGovern from Central Specialist Crime said.
“They were unaware that Shah was carrying out unnecessary, invasive examinations on female patients for his own sexual gratification, after giving his victims misleading clinical advice. These offences are particularly grave due to Shah’s abuse of his position, and of the trust placed in him as a family doctor,” McGovern continued.
“His conviction is the culmination of a huge amount of work on what was a complex, sensitive investigation which was supported by NHS England. I would like to acknowledge the women who were victims of Shah, and who supported the prosecution and gave evidence at Shah’s trials. Without their evidence, Shah may not have been brought to justice, but the weight of evidence against him at both trials was overwhelming,” the detective concluded.
Last August, Voice of Europe reported that shocking figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act which revealedthat foreign-trained doctors are involved in 60 percent of cases involving sexual misconduct with patients, despite only making up 30 percent of NHS doctors.
