Late into the night near Buckingham Palace, a distressing incident unfolded as a knifeman, fervently shouting “Allahu Akbar,” carried out a deliberate attack on police officers. The assailant, driving a blue Toyota Prius, targeted a marked police vehicle, injuring two officers in the process.
Commander Dean Haydon, leading the Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism branch, disclosed that the incident was being treated as an act of terrorism. Authorities believe the assailant acted alone, and no additional suspects are currently sought.
Uniformed officers confronted the driver after the collision, only to face a chilling escalation when the assailant reached for a four-foot sword from the passenger footwell. In the ensuing struggle, CS gas was employed during the arrest, with the individual repeatedly shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
The Metropolitan Police detailed the arrest outside Buckingham Palace at 8.35 pm, following initial observations by officers. The 26-year-old suspect, apprehended on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assault on police, was found in possession of a weapon on The Mall. Counter-terrorism police have taken charge of the investigation, and the individual is under interrogation at a central London station.
The confrontation resulted in minor injuries to two male police officers, treated on-site by the London Ambulance Service. Remarkably, they did not require hospitalization, and no other injuries were reported. Officers maintained a presence at the scene as investigations continued.
Detective Superintendent Guy Collings praised the swift and courageous actions of the officers, emphasizing that no members of the public had direct interaction with the assailant. Prime Minister Theresa May expressed gratitude to the officers via Twitter, commending their quick and brave response in protecting the public.
The aftermath of the incident saw the cordoning off of Birdcage Walk and The Mall, the roads surrounding St James’s Park, as law enforcement worked diligently to secure the area and unravel the details surrounding this unsettling act of violence.
The attack at Buckingham Palace last night tells us police officers should now be armed with tasers at the very least.
