Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage is set to attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, next week. Despite his pivotal role in the Brexit campaign and his criticism of President Obama for interfering in British politics, Farage has refused to endorse any potential presidential candidate. He stated, “Having criticised President Obama for getting involved in British politics, I am not about to endorse anybody. But I do know a lot of people in the Republican Party, and I’ll be interested to hear what Donald Trump has to say in his big speech.”
Farage believes that President Obama’s intervention in the Brexit debate backfired, contributing to the success of the Leave campaign. He noted, “We got an Obama-Brexit bounce because people do not want foreign leaders telling them how to think and vote.” While Trump is now the Republican party’s presumptive presidential nominee, he faces resistance from the party’s establishment wing.
Despite attending the convention as an observer, Farage declined to disclose who invited him, emphasizing that Trump himself did not extend the invitation. The former Ukip leader stepped down from his position after the Brexit referendum resulted in a vote to sever ties with Brussels. Farage’s presence at the convention underscores the complex and interconnected nature of international politics, as key figures from various political landscapes converge on the global stage.
