The results of a recent poll have unveiled disquieting sentiments among British Muslims, revealing that a significant majority, approximately two-thirds, would refrain from informing the police if someone close to them was suspected of associating with terrorist sympathizers. This startling revelation suggests that over 100,000 British Muslims might harbor sympathy towards individuals involved in acts of terrorism, including suicide bombers.
The survey underscores a perceived failure in the Government’s counter-terrorism initiative, Prevent, as it seems unable to gather intelligence from Muslim communities. Former chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Trevor Phillips, expressed his astonishment and concern at this revelation, describing it as “troubling.”
Beyond concerns about terrorism, the poll shed light on other societal attitudes within the British Muslim community. More than half of the respondents believed that homosexuality should be illegal in Britain, and 23% expressed a desire for Sharia to replace British law in specific regions of the country.
Additional findings revealed that 39% of respondents felt that wives should always obey their husbands, while 31% considered it acceptable to have more than one wife. A disconcerting 5% of participants sympathized with those who engaged in stoning adulterers.
Trevor Phillips emphasized the survey’s portrayal of the “unacknowledged creation of a nation within the nation,” with its distinct geography, values, and a potentially separate future. He remarked, “For a long time, I too thought that Europe’s Muslims would become like previous waves of migrants, gradually abandoning their ancestral ways, wearing their religious and cultural baggage lightly, and gradually blending into Britain’s diverse identity landscape.”
In response to these findings, Phillips argued for a more robust approach to integration, suggesting that the integration of Muslims into British society requires a “muscular approach.” The survey, based on responses from a random sample of 1,081 British Muslims aged 18 and over, has ignited discussions on the challenges of fostering integration and understanding within the diverse fabric of the nation.
