UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon says British ministers are considering plans to train “moderate” militants operating in Syria to fight the ISIL terrorist group.

Fallon announced the plans in an interview with British media on Tuesday, saying UK troops could be deployed to one of Syria’s neighboring countries, possibly Jordan, to provide training to Syrian militants.

The British defense secretary did not give any further information regarding which militant group would receive the training or who would be included in the British group.

The proposed plan comes just a day after Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond announced that the UK is to fund bomb disposal training for the Kurdish Peshmerga forces battling ISIL militants in northern Iraq.

The UK has also deployed a group of 12 soldiers to train Iraqi Kurdish fighters using British-supplied heavy machine guns.

The ISIL Takfiri terrorists, who currently control parts of Syria and Iraq, have committed widespread acts of violence, including mass executions, abductions, torture and forcing women into slavery in the areas they have seized in the two countries. They have threatened all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and Izadi Kurds, as they continue their atrocities in Iraq.

Last month, British MPs voted to back the UK joining US-led airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq.

The United States and its Arab allies have been conducting airstrikes against ISIL positions inside Syria since late September, without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate. The US also started its airstrikes on Iraq in early August.

Many countries in the so-called US-led coalition against ISIL, such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have supported the Takfiri militants over the past years.
