David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the UK, has held phone talks with his Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy to voice “serious concerns” about recent events surrounding Gibraltar and its border crossing into Spain, local media reported.
This comes after Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo announced earlier that his country may impose border fees for vehicles entering or leaving the British Overseas Territory and also close its airspace to planes destined for the Rock’s airport.
Bilateral relations between London and Madrid are further strained after Gibraltar’s chief minister said Spain was acting like North Korea, when its foreign minister announced a €50 border fee for vehicles entering or leaving Gibraltar.
Gibraltar is a territory on the southern tip of Spain with a population of almost 30,000 people. London and Madrid have been running long disputes over the sovereignty of the territory.
Tensions between Spain and Gibraltar flared up last month when the Rock’s authorities announced plan for creating an artificial reef for fish and boats began dumping concrete blocks into the sea. On other side of the border, Spanish authorities said the reef would block its fishing boats.
Gibraltar was occupied by Britain in 1713 and has been since a bone of contention between Madrid and London.
The United Nations lists the strategic 6.8-kilometer area that overlooks the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean as a territory waiting to be decolonized.
