Yemeni protestors demand the resignation of Ali Abdullah Saleh at a huge demonstration in the capital, Sana'a, October 4, 2011.

Anti-regime protesters have staged more massive demonstrations in two major cities in Yemen, demanding the immediate resignation of Ali Abdullah Saleh, Press TV reports.

On Thursday, tens of thousands of people packed the streets in the capital Sana’a and the southern city of Taizz, which have been a flashpoint of clashes between anti-regime protesters and Saleh loyalists.

The protesters condemned the regime’s recent shelling of residential areas in the cities.

The new rallies come as forces loyal to Saleh continue to crack down on anti-government protesters.

Hundreds have been killed and many more injured in Yemen since late February, when a popular uprising erupted in Yemen, encouraged by the ouster of the Western-backed dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia in January and the ouster of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak in mid-February.

Yemeni protesters have repeatedly held demonstrations to reject what they call the Saudi and US domination of the country and to condemn their attempts to hijack the popular revolution in Yemen.
