A dire report prepared for President Medvedev by Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources is warning today that the British Petroleum (BP) oil and gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico is about to become the worst environmental catastrophe in all of human history threatening the entire eastern half of the North American continent with “total destruction”.
Russian scientists are basing their apocalyptic destruction assessment due to BP’s use of millions of gallons of the chemical dispersal agent known as Corexit 9500 which is being pumped directly into the leak of this wellhead over a mile under the Gulf of Mexico waters and designed, this report says, to keep hidden from the American public the full, and tragic, extent of this leak that is now estimated to be over 2.9 million gallons a day.
The dispersal agent Corexit 9500 is a solvent originally developed by Exxon and now manufactured by the Nalco Holding Company of Naperville, Illinois that is four times more toxic than oil (oil is toxic at 11 ppm (parts per million), Corexit 9500 at only 2.61ppm). In a report written by Anita George-Ares and James R. Clark for Exxon Biomedical Sciences, Inc. titled “Acute Aquatic Toxicity of Three Corexit Products: An Overview” Corexit 9500 was found to be one of the most toxic dispersal agents ever developed. Even worse, according to this report, with higher water temperatures, like those now occurring in the Gulf of Mexico, its toxicity grows.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in discovering BP’s use of this dangerous dispersal agent ordered BP to stop using it, but BP refused stating that their only alternative to Corexit 9500 was an even more dangerous dispersal agent known as Sea Brat 4.
The main differences between Corexit 9500 and Sea Brat 4 lie in how long these dangerous chemicals take to degrade into their constituent organic compounds, which for Corexit 9500 is 28 days. Sea Brat 4, on the other hand, degrades into an organic chemical called Nonylphenol that is toxic to aquatic life and can persist in the environment for years.
A greater danger involving Corexit 9500, and as outlined by Russian scientists in this report, is that with its 2.61ppm toxicity level, and when combined with the heating Gulf of Mexico waters, its molecules will be able to “phase transition” from their present liquid to a gaseous state allowing them to be absorbed into clouds and allowing their release as “toxic rain” upon all of Eastern North America.
Even worse, should a Katrina like tropical hurricane form in the Gulf of Mexico while tens of millions of gallons of Corexit 9500 are sitting on, or near, its surface the resulting “toxic rain” falling upon the North American continent could “theoretically” destroy all microbial life to any depth it reaches resulting in an “unimaginable environmental catastrophe” destroying all life forms from the “bottom of the evolutionary chart to the top”.
Note: For molecules of a liquid to evaporate, they must be located near the surface, be moving in the proper direction, and have sufficient kinetic energy to overcome liquid-phase intermolecular forces. Only a small proportion of the molecules meet these criteria, so the rate of evaporation is limited. Since the kinetic energy of a molecule is proportional to its temperature, evaporation proceeds more quickly at higher temperatures.
As over 50 miles of the US State of Louisiana’s coastline has already been destroyed by this spill, American scientists are warning that the damage may be impossible to repair, and as we can read as reported by the Associated Press News Service:
And to understand the full import of this catastrophe it must be remembered that this disaster is occurring in what is described as the “biologically richest waters in America” with the greatest amount of oil and toxic Corexit 9500 set to come ashore in the coming days and weeks to destroy it completely for decades to come.
Reports are also coming from the United States that their government is secretly preparing to evacuate tens-of-millions of their citizens from their Gulf of Mexico States should the most dire of these scientific warnings start to come true.
To the greatest lesson to be learned by these Americans is that their government-oil industry cabal has been just as destructive to them as their government-banking one, both of which have done more to destroy the United States these past couple of years than any foreign enemy could dare dream was possible.
But to their greatest enemy the Americans need look no further than their nearest mirror as they are the ones who allowed these monsters to rule over them in the first place.

You know, I am getting damn tired of journalists from other countries telling me, an U.S. American citizen, to do something about “my government” while not realizing the political realties in this country. As a long time American Marxist, I consider the ending of this article an insult.
I have been a political and then a human rights activist since 1969, who lived in Washington, D.C. until recently, starting with the massive Vietnam anti-war demonstrations and ending with working for Amnesty International USA as a result of the photographs from Abu Ghraib until 2007, and have come to the following (the few listed here) conclusions:
1.) The U.S. American citizens have absolutely no say in what the government of the United States of America does to them or to the people of the world. The elections have been definitely rigged since electronic “voting “machines were first used on mass throughout the country. This became painfully solid to me in 2004 when Bush was “elected again” and when huge amounts of evidence came out, mostly unreported in the U.S. mass media. Like one commenter correctly stated before, “IT IS ALL A LIE.” to keep the majority of us (if I may use that word to refer to all U.S American citizens) in line, quiet and supportive of a system long ago rigged to NOT be democratic. The Untied States of America was never a democracy, now it is no longer a Republic. It is now completely owned by the bosses of the transnational corporations who also own other countries’ governments and leaders, including Russia’s.
2.) With the U.S. corporation-owned mass media constantly lying and/or not disclosing everything to us about important issues, how can I (as an activist who do check out alternative and outside news sources) be expected to educate all of my fellow Americans with the constant bombardment of lies and pro-war propaganda that they are exposed to not to say anything about how the “news” is presented as entertainment and serious issues/problems are ignored in the mass media. I would be a rich person by now if I was paid a dime for every time and for every “friend” or acquaintance who turned away and go back into denial, and for every fellow American who shout at me that I am anti-American or anti-Semitic, whenever I do give them information gleamed from “outside” sources about what is really happening in the U.S. government, in the Middle East and in the world. I had a difficult time getting through to the brainwashed masses in my own country (including my own adult daughter) no matter how gently I presented it, because the majority of Americans basically seem not to care unless it directly affects their survival like a loss job, home and food source.
If the information in this article is true (I have serious doubts about the source) and does come to pass, stay turn for complete chaos erupting in America resulting in either a civil war squashed by a police state takeover (i.e. Fascism) or another American revolution. It is hard to predict, because I am seeing so many conservative Americans getting really angry and beginning to think in an opposite direction, wanting to take action for the first time in their lives which means “against the government of the United States”. Now as soon as the results of this Halliburton/BP oil volcano is felt throughout our oil based economy and society, as well as in our food supplies, as the Depression deepens and the collapse of our linear Western civilization speeds up, our ability to move fast in cars will eventually slow to a stop along with the electricity to our computers and our exported food supplies will end. This is another reason why my husband (who first became politically involved in the counter sit ins of the Civil Rights movement) and I stopped taking part in demonstrations and other, now, useless political actions and moved away from the east coast to “walk our talk” … to help create a foundation for the new society and for a stainable “circular” civilization that we wish to see in the world as the old exploitive and dangerous to all life on earth, Western civilization, dies out.
If a Russian journalist really wrote this article, he/she should have learnt something by their own history and support the U.S. American citizens instead of criticizing us for finding ourselves in the same situations that they, the Russian people, have experienced several times in their own past.

Cynthia darling, NO chemical is a good thing. Antifreeze, bleach, ammonia, insecticide, etc.
Of course corexit is toxic. We used to use a corexit demulsifier offshore, to inject into our flowstream. I worked on production platforms. Corexit is a trade name for a whole line of chemicals developed by Exxon Chemicals. They later sold the corexit line to NALCO, another chemical company.
Corexit 9500 is an oil dispersant. Sure it’s toxic. The drum gas a sticker on it that says toxic to aquatic life. But it disperses oil, and keeps a lot of it from coming to shore.
Corexit 9500 consists of mineral spirits (essentially paint thinner) that thin out the oil slick on the surface, breaking it up into smaller individual droplets. It also has organic sulfonates that make it water soluble. Organic sulfonates are also in detergents to make them water soluble.
Being dissolved in water, all the corexit will NOT evaporate and cause the toxic rains that article mentioned. A lot can evaporate, but not enough to kill the whole east coast!
Like I said, of course it’s a toxic chemical. So is crude oil, which is a complex compound of many, many chemicals and gases.
None of this is good.
However, an untreated oil slick of this magnitude is the greater evil, I assure you. Without corexit, the whole southern coast would be pitch black by now.
We all wish this accident hadn’t happened. The accident was not planned, I assure you. And its victims are life itself.

A Lethal Concentration

The standard toxicity test for chemical compounds is called the LD50. LD stands for Lethal Dose and 50 indicates 50 percent. In other words, LD50 means the lowest dose at which a material kills half of the test subjects.
The results are usually given in milligrams of compound per kilograms of body weight. Many of these tests are conducted on laboratory rats. To give you a few rat results: the LD50 of table sugar (sucrose) is 29,700 mg/kg. For table salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) it’s 3,000 mg/kg. Really poisonous substances, though, measure in the single digits: Sodium cyanide (NaCN), for instance, possesses an LD50 score of 6.4 mg/kg.
Basically, the lower the number, the deadlier the compound. Poisons in water and air are usually measured in lethal concentration rather than dose – in other words an LC50. Which got me wondering about the oil pouring into the Gulf of Mexico from BP’s shattered oil rig. Not to mention the chemical dispersants being used in attempt to break down the spreading oil. What kind of lethal concentration might be building up in those waters?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data on dispersants provide the LC50 in parts per million. Of course, these tests aren’t done on rats but sea creatures, in this case Menidia, a small silvery fish that likes to hover near the water’s edge and Mysidopsis, a tiny brine shrimp.
As has been earlier reported, Corexit, the compound chosen by BP, has some of the lowest LC50 numbers on the list, meaning that it’s among the most poisonous. Also, it’s among the least effective on Louisiana crude (the type flowing from the Deepwater break). Why the EPA went along with this choice remains a mystery to me – or maybe I just think the answer would depress me – but under public pressure the agency has now ordered BP to find an immediate alternative.
Nearly 700,000 gallons of Corexit have already been poured into gulf waters. But that pales, obviously, beside the amount of Louisana crude, now estimated at a minimum of 6 million gallons. So, I wondered, what is the LC50 of Louisiana crude on small salt water dwellers?
Of course, I realize, that comparing lethal concentrations is not straightforward. The results differ by species and by time as well as by amount of poison, The EPA numbers for Corexit 9500 (the formula used most heavily by BP) show that at 2.62 ppm, the dispersant kills half the silver fish in 96 hours/ four days. At a slightly higher concentration – 3.4 ppm – the compound kills half the little shrimp in two days.
As for crude oils, a very decent analysis by the American Petroleum Institute shows that all are toxic, but their effects vary with thickness and with the different chemistry seen in say, oil from the Gulf of Mexico and oil from Kuwait. The best estimate I’ve seen for South Louisiana Crude – after hours of exasperated research – comes from thesis work done at Louisiana State University several years ago. For instance, the study found that Louisiana crude had an LC50 of 4250 ppm for the warm-water loving killifish.
This suggests that crude oil is less acutely poisonous than chemical dispersants. But here’s the really interesting finding in that terrific little study. Adding a dispersant – specifically Corexit 9500 – made the oil more poisonous. A lot more poisonous.
The “dispersed” oil had an LC50 of 317.7 ppm, making it more than 11 times more lethal in its effects. The study found a similar worsening for white shrimp, although not quite as dramatic. “Dispersed oils were more toxic than crude oils,” noted the report.
Oh, definitely. Still, you might argue that this is only a master’s thesis conclusion. But as it turns out there are plenty of other studies raising very similar warnings and they go back quite a ways. A report in the journal Environmental Toxicology a decade ago concluded that “LC50 values indicate that dispersed oil combinations were significantly more toxic to these organisms than .. crude oil.” Another study, this time of snails and amphipods reached exactly the same conclusion.
To be fair, a study of the Australian octopus found no increased toxicity. But don’t you wonder what we’re doing out there in the fragile environment of the Gulf, whether we’re reducing the spill damage or just turning the whole area into one ever-more poisonous bowl of toxic soup?
And don’t you wish our officials gave any indication that they knew more about it than we do? I love doing this kind of research but in this case I’d much rather have our country’s so-called regulators waving the LC50 red flag ahead of me

Corexit9500 is basically mineral spirits and organic salts of sulfonic acid to ensure solubility with water. This means it can’t all evaporate. It’s a chemical, ok? No chemical is good, but neither is an oil slick.

That is straight out wrong. Votes do make a difference, whether one deals with school, local, or national elections. We have had several presidents that have been close to call and if x amount of people decided they just weren’t going to vote that day because they felt their vote did not count we would have different presidents. Take 1876 with Hayes vs Tilden or 1800 with Jefferson and Burr. If more people voted the decision might have been towards the non-elect than who served as president.
So, strictly commenting in reference to as to whether votes count, they do. Saying that no votes count is along the lines of the saying that the trash one accumulates and fails to reycle doesn’t contribute to the poor conditions of earth but it does matter. Each vote DOES count, just as each action you do counts towards how the earth’s condition is.

Love it, love it, love it. Too true. What’s the point of 2 homes, 5 cars, 3 jobs, and a diamond ring? The point is – we’ve learned nothing of life, love, peace, or progression for humanity’s sake. 3 – Move away from oil, gas, and coal completely. When have the technology to run on electric, which means no emissions, which means no harm to the planet. The sun is permanent reusable SUSTAINABLE energy. Again, we have the technology… so what’s the question? What’s the hesitation? OH! That’s right. Stock in oil! Darn!
4 – Do not elect anyone for any office ever again that does not fully support a complete removal from oil. If you elect one or two here and there that still support oil and drilling, guess what???? We won’t make the transition away from oil because we don’t have to.
It’s all pretty simple, really. We are destroying our planet, and now we’re doing it even faster with the help of BP and Obama, who just OK’d another hole to be drilled in the Gulf of Mexico in SHALLOW water, not even relating to the first F* up. Get him outta there, get BP outta there, get this problem fixed no matter who does it and how much it’s going to cost us, and then learn from our mistake – NO MORE OIL. Solar power, wind power, water power, all sustainable, natural, non-harmful technologies that will sustain our way of life, AND the planet.

Well Karia, why is it that only the US doesn’t insist on basic safety mechanisms to shut off the flow of oil in case of emergency? Because it would cost the corporation money (the valve in questions costs about 500 million) and the US doesn’t like to cost corporations money, likes to give it to them – so yes, we are stupid. Don’t forget, that as the US gov goes down its fiscal toilet, it earns money off off-shore drilling, thus the incentive to continue drilling. Rather than taken umbrage at the Russians, let’s stop being stupid. Like let’s take the corporations at the rate they were taxed in 1970, remove their personhood, and clean up the environment.
