In a stark warning, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the imperative for eastern NATO members to brace themselves for potential conflict with Russia, asserting that Moscow’s ambitions may not cease even if it defeats the forces in Kiev.
Speaking at a hearing of the US House Armed Services Committee on Thursday, Austin urged lawmakers to approve additional funding for Kiev’s war effort. He painted a somber picture for NATO allies, particularly those in the Baltics, suggesting that they should be concerned about their own security given the unpredictable nature of Russia’s actions.
“If you are a Baltic state, you are really worried about whether you are next… And, frankly, if Ukraine falls, I really believe that NATO will be in a fight with Russia,” Austin warned.
The Defense Secretary argued that the consequences of Ukraine falling to Russia would extend beyond the immediate region. He suggested that autocratic leaders worldwide could be emboldened by the perceived failure to support a democracy, potentially encouraging further aggression.
The United States has been a primary supporter of Ukraine since Russia initiated its military operation in 2022. However, the $45 billion allocated for assistance has been depleted, and US support has dwindled, especially after Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive failed to achieve significant gains.
President Zelensky’s recent warning about Ukraine’s potential loss of the war without continued US support adds urgency to the situation. A new $60 billion aid package for Kiev faces hurdles in Congress, with Republican opposition contributing to the gridlock.
Amid the ongoing debate over renewed aid, the US military is contemplating whether to utilize its last remaining $4 billion allocated for Ukraine, even without assurances that Congress will replenish the funds. The uncertainty surrounding financial support raises concerns about the sustainability of Ukraine’s defense efforts in the face of an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
