The recent wave of farmer uprisings across Europe has compelled the globalist European Union (EU) leadership in Brussels to make significant concessions to its green agenda, temporarily shelving key elements aimed at achieving “net zero” emissions. The farmers, who have been staging protests and tractor blockades in major cities, secured a notable victory as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen abandoned plans to mandate a one-third reduction in methane and nitrogen emissions by the agriculture sector by 2040.
Brussels is also expected to reverse course on proposals to halve pesticide use within the same timeframe. Farmers argue that such measures disadvantage them against foreign competitors with less stringent environmental regulations, importing agricultural products at lower costs under free trade agreements. Plans promoting reduced meat consumption, aligned with the Great Reset movement, have also been abandoned.
Acknowledging the concerns of farmers, von der Leyen stated, “Our farmers deserve to be listened to,” recognizing worries about the future of agriculture. Despite these concessions, farmers still grapple with over-regulation at both national and EU levels and contend with challenges from cheaper foreign produce, particularly from Ukraine, which gained tariff-free access to the EU market post-Russia invasion.
Farmer protests, which began in the Netherlands four years ago, have intensified across major European cities, causing disruptions and supply chain issues. While nearly 90% of French voters support the tractor protests, concerns in Brussels have risen about the potential impact on the upcoming European Union Parliament elections in June, fearing it could become a referendum on the perceived failures of the green agenda.
The green agenda has been criticized for leaving Europe vulnerable to external events, such as the war in Ukraine, leading to increased energy costs in a region where domestic fossil fuel production has diminished in favor of renewables. While the recent concessions are seen as a victory by farmers, some activists stress the need to persist in pressuring the EU leadership, advocating for a complete overhaul of the Green Deal and the NetZero initiative.
