As Australia emerges from two years of Covid isolation, a new health concern is taking center stage: the outbreak of a ‘super cold.’ Health experts are sounding the alarm about the potential rise in respiratory illnesses as the country reopens, with the super cold making its presence felt after initially surfacing in the UK in November.

This peculiar cold, exhibiting flu-like or Coronavirus-like symptoms, has baffled many as individuals repeatedly test negative for Covid despite experiencing similar health issues. Thousands in Australia are reportedly falling victim to this new ailment, with cases spreading rapidly across the nation.

A Sydney woman, who had recently recovered from Covid, shared her experience with the super cold, expressing disbelief at the negative test results. The symptoms, akin to both flu and Covid, make it challenging to distinguish between the illnesses. The yoga instructor from the Northern Beaches detailed her ordeal, stating, ‘I just feel awful – it might even be worse than Covid.’

According to Sydney GP Dr. Charlotte Hespe, there is a surge in upper respiratory tract infections, with classic cold symptoms such as sneezing, a runny nose, cough, sore throat, and sticky eyes becoming more prevalent. Differentiating between these symptoms and the Omicron Covid strain, with its milder manifestations, poses a considerable challenge.

Dr. Hespe expressed concern that Australia is susceptible to a flu outbreak due to reduced immunity caused by travel bans, lockdown measures, and mask mandates during the pandemic. With people resuming travel and bringing viruses from winter countries, the nation is facing a heightened risk of colds and flus.

Epidemiologist Professor Catherine Bennett warned of the potential for the flu to cause more deaths than Covid this year, emphasizing the decreased immunity resulting from skipping two flu seasons. Despite concerns about vaccine fatigue, health authorities plan to roll out a flu shot campaign in the coming weeks. Dr. Hespe urged people not to underestimate the importance of vaccinations, emphasizing their effectiveness in providing protection against these illnesses.

As the specter of a severe cold and flu season looms over Australia, health officials recommend continued mask-wearing in crowded situations and around potentially unwell individuals. Additionally, individuals experiencing symptoms are advised to stay at home to prevent the spread of illnesses to others. The evolving situation underscores the challenges and uncertainties accompanying the country’s post-isolation period.
