In a dramatic incident in Croydon, London, armed police intervened and tasered a man who had seized a bus and threatened passengers and the driver with a corrosive substance. The tense standoff unfolded on a 109 bus after a 44-year-old man boarded in Brixton and began smoking, leading to confrontation with passengers. The situation escalated when the man produced a bottle containing what was believed to be a corrosive substance.
Armed police surrounded the bus, with officers in chemical suits approaching the vehicle. The man was ordered to stand up and exit the bus, but he refused, resulting in officers storming the bus. The assailant was tasered, detained, and later stripped in the street. Emergency services, including the Metropolitan Police’s Territorial Support Group, responded to the incident, which involved a three-hour standoff.
During the confrontation, passengers left the bus, and the corrosive substance was not thrown at anyone. The Metropolitan Police detained the suspect, dressed him in an orange jumpsuit, and secured him to a gurney for transport to the hospital for medical evaluation. Although the man had taken drugs, his condition was deemed not life-threatening.
Following the arrest, chemical experts assessed the substance and confirmed it was not harmful. The police cordoned off the area, and a safety perimeter was established to ensure public safety. Motivations behind the man’s actions remained unclear, and the incident did not result in any reported injuries or hostages.
In a statement, Croydon police indicated that the 44-year-old man was arrested for affray, and the substance posed no harm. Taser deployment occurred prior to the arrest, with officers suspecting drug use by the assailant. All cordons were eventually lifted, but a police presence remained in London Road, Thornton Heath. The motivations behind the man’s threatening actions on the bus were still under investigation.
