Japan’s western coast faced a significant 7.6 earthquake followed by a tsunami on Monday, creating concerns about the impact on nuclear power plants. The authorities reassured that, although several plants were affected, there have been no signs of “abnormalities” so far. The initial quake registered seven on the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Shindo seismic scale, indicating the maximum intensity at the surface.

The seismic event triggered a tsunami warning for coastal areas, including Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama, and Yamagata prefectures. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida addressed the public, particularly those residing in areas prone to tsunamis, urging prompt evacuation. According to the national broadcaster NHK, waves in some regions may have reached a height of 5 meters.

Government spokesman Hayashi Yoshimasa, during an emergency press conference, emphasized that authorities were evaluating the extent of the earthquake’s damage and cautioned the public to be prepared for potential aftershocks. Social media posts revealed videos depicting cracked roads, partially collapsed buildings, and a fire.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority reported damage to the Shiga Nuclear Power Plant in Ishikawa Prefecture and the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Niigata Prefecture. Notably, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant had recently resumed operations last Wednesday after being offline since 2012.

Despite some facilities not operating during the earthquake, the Nuclear Regulation Authority assured that no abnormalities had been detected, with continuous monitoring of all nuclear power plants in the affected areas.

As a precaution, South Korea’s meteorological agency alerted citizens to potential rises in sea levels off its eastern coast. Additionally, authorities in the Russian island region of Sakhalin issued a tsunami alert, emphasizing the interconnected nature of regional responses to seismic events.
