Elon Musk has announced a milestone for his biotech company Neuralink, revealing the successful implantation of one of its brain chips in a human for the first time. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO shared the news on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), stating that the recipient is recovering well after the surgery.
While Musk provided limited details, he mentioned that the initial results showed “promising neuron spike detection,” referring to the brain cells responsible for sending chemical and electrical signals throughout the body. Neuralink’s broader goal is to create an interface enabling individuals to control devices using their brain alone.
Last year, Neuralink introduced its first human trial named PRIME (Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface). The company aims to develop a “fully-implantable, wireless brain-computer interface” with potential groundbreaking applications for individuals with various disabilities, including paralysis.
Utilizing the R1 Robot, Neuralink surgically implants the chip in a brain region controlling motor function. The implanted device is designed to “record and transmit brain signals wirelessly to an app that decodes movement intention.”
The trial received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May last year, overcoming previous allegations of “animal-welfare violations” during earlier tests. Reports from current and former Neuralink employees, along with internal documents obtained by Reuters, suggested that Musk’s push for accelerated development sometimes resulted in “botched experiments.”
Musk envisions the brain implant contributing to medical advancements, potentially restoring sight for the blind and other transformative possibilities. While the outcomes of the first human trial are yet to be revealed, Musk previously showcased the brain chip in a presentation, demonstrating a macaque monkey purportedly playing a video game using its mind alone in April 2021.
