Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a stern warning to Hezbollah, cautioning them against carrying out attacks near Israel’s northern border. He emphasized that continued provocations by Hezbollah could lead to a costly mistake, with the Lebanese citizens ultimately bearing the brunt of the conflict escalation. Gallant made this statement during a visit to troops at the IDF’s 91st Division’s base in northern Israel.
“Hezbollah is dragging Lebanon into a war that may happen, and it is making mistakes,” Gallant stated. “If it makes mistakes of this kind, the ones who will pay the price are first of all the citizens of Lebanon. What we are doing in Gaza, we know how to do in Beirut,” he warned.
This warning followed an incident in which Israel killed seven Hezbollah fighters near its Lebanese border, bringing the total number of casualties to 78 since a cross-border attack by Hamas in southern Israel. Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed Lebanese political and militant group, referred to the seven fighters as “martyred on the road to Jerusalem.”
The increased death toll in Lebanon, as well as the killing of 18 Palestinians by Israeli forces in the West Bank, raised concerns of a wider escalation of the conflict. Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, expressed the belief that such an escalation was becoming inevitable.
Hezbollah’s leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, also acknowledged an “upgrade” in the group’s operations on the front with Israel, including an increase in the number of operations, targets, and types of weapons used.
In response to the Hezbollah threat, Gallant emphasized that Israel’s focus was on its northern border, with the “noses of [our] planes pointing north.” He also noted that the Israeli Air Force was utilizing just a fraction of its assets in Gaza.
