The Finnish government has decided to close the last border crossing with Russia. The neighboring country is accused of sending asylum seekers across the border.
The decision, which was taken during an extraordinary cabinet meeting on Tuesday afternoon, means that the border will be inaccessible to all types of traffic except freight traffic.
This applies for the time being until December 13.
The background is an increase in the number of asylum seekers at the border crossings in recent weeks, which Finnish authorities have called an attempt at a hybrid attack.
“There are clear signs that it is a matter of instrumentalized immigration. The Russian authorities have begun to allow border crossings from Russia to Finland even for people who lack the necessary documents. Illegal entries can quickly increase and become more intense,” writes the Finnish government in a press release .
During November, over 600 asylum seekers came to Finland via the eastern border.
The EU has sent border guards to assist Finland.
