Bolivia’s government has taken a significant diplomatic step, announcing the severance of relations with Israel in response to Israel’s military operations in Gaza and its alleged treatment of Palestinians.

Deputy Foreign Minister Freddy Mamani stated during a press conference, “Bolivia decided to break diplomatic relations with the state of Israel in repudiation and condemnation of the aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive taking place in the Gaza Strip.” The country’s Acting Foreign Minister, Maria Nela Prada, went further, accusing Israel of “committing crimes against humanity” in Gaza.

The Bolivian government demanded that Israel immediately halt its attacks in Gaza, citing the thousands of civilian casualties and forced displacement of Palestinians as a grave concern. Additionally, they called for an end to the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which obstructs the entry of essential items such as food and water, in violation of international humanitarian law.

This decision comes after a meeting between President Luis Arce and Palestinian ambassador Mahmoud Elalwani. Bolivia had previously severed relations with Israel in 2009 under then-President Evo Morales, although diplomatic relations were restored under a pro-US government in 2019. They continued when Morales’s party, now led by Arce, returned to power in 2020.

Former President Morales expressed his criticism on social media, asserting that the move to sever diplomatic ties with Israel took three years and was only enacted due to public pressure. He called for more decisive action, urging Bolivia to declare Israel a terrorist state and file a complaint with the International Criminal Court.

It’s important to note that Bolivia’s decision comes amid rising tensions in the Gaza Strip following an incursion by the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The conflict has resulted in a high number of casualties on both sides and has drawn international attention.
