More than 10 million individuals may have illegally entered the United States since President Joe Biden assumed office in January 2021, as reported by the Center Square, a conservative US-based website. Since the outset of his presidency, President Biden’s border policy has faced intense criticism, as it witnessed a sudden surge of migrants crossing the Mexican border.
At present, GOP presidential candidates and lawmakers are directing strong criticism towards Team Biden for the perceived failure to secure the nation’s southern border. Consequently, the Biden administration has reversed its decision to dismantle the Donald Trump-era initiative to build a border wall. Early in October, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed plans to install an additional 20 miles of barriers along the Rio Grande in southeastern Texas.
The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released data on Friday indicating that over 900,000 migrants were released into the country in fiscal year 2023. This marks the third consecutive year of record-high illegal border crossings during Joe Biden’s presidency.
Center Square, a project of the Franklin News Foundation, a conservative online news organization, estimates that the number of unauthorized entries into the US has now reached a staggering 10 million since President Biden took office in January 2021.
The media outlet drew on official US CBP data from fiscal years 2020-2023, accounting for CBP-reported apprehensions. This includes 3,201,144 apprehensions in fiscal 2023, 2,766,582 in fiscal 2022, 1,956,519 in fiscal 2021, and 471,954 in the first nine months of Biden’s administration in fiscal 2020, resulting in a total of 8,396,199 official apprehensions.
The conservative media highlighted that this figure does not encompass “gotaway data,” which CBP does not publicly disclose. Nonetheless, the media obtained these numbers from a Border Patrol agent who requested anonymity. As a result, the media outlet estimated that the minimum reported gotaways from January 1, 2021, to September 30, 2023, could be at least 1,678,979.
Since January 2021, the total of illegal border crossers apprehended nationwide amounts to 8,396,198. When combined with at least 1,678,979 gotaways, the total figure surpasses 10 million, at a minimum of 10,075,177, as noted by the conservative media outlet.
The report emphasized that this enormous figure exceeds the individual populations of 41 US states, with only a few states having a population exceeding 10 million. It further added that among those who illegally crossed the border were thousands of suspected terrorists, in addition to drug and human traffickers.
This border challenge contributes to President Joe Biden’s declining approval ratings. His approval among Democratic Party members dropped 11 percentage points since September to 75%, while his overall approval now stands at 37%, according to a recent Gallup poll.
