At a Trans+ Pride event in London, Sarah Jane Baker, a transgender individual with a criminal past, delivered a controversial speech that sparked outrage and calls for accountability. Baker, who served a lengthy prison sentence for attempted murder, addressed the crowd while brandishing an Antifa flag, urging attendees to resort to violence against those critical of transgender ideology.
In a fiery speech, Baker eschewed pleasantries and instead advocated for aggressive action, declaring, “If you see a TERF, punch them in the f****** face,” eliciting cheers from the audience. The use of violent rhetoric drew swift condemnation on social media, with many expressing concerns over the promotion of physical harm.
Labour MP Clive Lewis voiced his disapproval, emphasizing that advocating violence is unacceptable, while acknowledging the broader issue of toxicity within discussions surrounding gender identity. However, Alice Sullivan, a sociology professor at University College London, rebuked Lewis’s attempt to equate both sides, asserting that male violence against women cannot be equated with feminist advocacy for women’s rights.
The Trans+ Pride event, touted as the largest demonstration for transgender rights, drew thousands of supporters who marched through London, culminating in speeches at Hyde Park Corner. Baker’s presence at the event, holding an Antifa flag, added to the controversy surrounding her remarks.
Baker’s troubled past, including convictions for kidnapping, torture, and attempted murder, further fueled criticism of her inflammatory rhetoric. The term “TERF,” short for trans-exclusionary radical feminist, is often used to denounce critics of transgender ideology.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed awareness of the video capturing Baker’s speech and indicated that they are reviewing it to determine if further action is warranted. This incident follows a similar controversy at a London Trans Pride march in 2021, where protesters displayed signs advocating violence against author JK Rowling.
As debates over transgender rights continue to polarize society, incidents like these underscore the need for constructive dialogue and mutual respect, while condemning any incitement to violence or intimidation.
