A remarkable sight unfolded over a northern Indian city as a massive storm cloud resembling a tsunami loomed ominously in the sky, captured in a viral video circulating online. This awe-inspiring phenomenon emerged amidst the onset of monsoon season in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, where severe rainfall warnings are currently in effect.
The colossal cloud formation, known as a ‘shelf cloud’ or ‘arcus cloud’, typically manifests along the leading edge of thunderstorms, presenting a spectacle rarely witnessed on the Indian subcontinent. As the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rain over the next few days, accompanied by thunderstorms throughout the week, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami cautioned residents to avoid unnecessary travel and urged tourists to postpone their visits until after the inclement weather subsides.
In the video footage, bewildered locals can be seen gazing skyward, captivated by the dramatic display unfolding above. Some hurriedly seek shelter as the impending storm approaches, while others seize the opportunity to document the rare occurrence. Amidst the cacophony of car horns echoing through the bustling streets, the distant rumble of thunder and gusts of wind underscore the intensity of the approaching tempest.
Although arcus clouds themselves are not inherently indicative of severe weather, they often accompany thunderstorms and serve as harbingers of inclement conditions. These mesmerizing formations materialize when cold, dense air collides with warmer air masses, propelled by prevailing winds. With bases reaching heights of up to 6500 feet, these expansive, low-level clouds assume the appearance of elongated, rolling columns, evoking a sense of awe and wonder in those fortunate enough to witness their rare manifestation.
