The conflict between Russian regular forces and the Wagner group, a private military company, has escalated with the capture of a lieutenant colonel from Putin’s army by Wagner mercenaries. In a humiliating video, the captured colonel confessed to shooting at a Wagner vehicle while intoxicated, citing personal animosity.
This incident underscores the deepening rift within Russian ranks, with Wagner accusing the regular army of targeting their forces with mines. The private army, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, has criticized Putin’s military leadership for allegedly abandoning Wagner fighters on the frontlines.
The captured colonel, identified as Roman Venevitin, admitted to leading a group of soldiers in disarming a Wagner rapid response team. However, there is no indication that he will face the brutal punishment often meted out by Wagner to traitors.
Prigozhin claimed that the regular army laid hundreds of mines to hinder Wagner forces during their withdrawal from Bakhmut, a city they helped seize from Ukrainian armed forces. This revelation highlights the internal divisions within Moscow’s forces fighting in Ukraine, raising concerns of potential civil unrest in Russia if Putin’s war efforts falter.
Despite significant losses, Prigozhin still commands a sizable force, estimated to be as large as 60,000 men. The Wagner group is just one of several private armies operating in Russia, reflecting the growing influence of paramilitary groups in the country.
