Journalist Maria Sveland photographed a man who had been falsely accused of rape in the courtroom – and posted him on Instagram. Now the 48-year-old radical feminist is sentenced to 24,000 kroner in daily fines for violating the court code.
The incident occurred in May 2021. At the time, the main hearing was underway in the Stockholm district court against a woman who was charged with gross defamation after accusing a man of raping both her and two other women.
Also present in the courtroom was Maria Sveland – one of the profiles behind the recently closed feminist Defamation Fund, which paid fines to women who defame men by lying about sexual abuse.
“She can’t be that stupid.”
A female witness who was also in the hall saw from a few meters away that Maria Sveland angled her mobile phone in front of her, held it up in the direction of the plaintiff and took a photo.
– I had time to think: “Oh my God, she can’t be that stupid”, said the witness in questioning.
She looked again and saw that Maria Sveland held the phone up for a few seconds and pressed her finger against the screen.
After the trial, the high-resolution image was posted uncensored on Maria Sveland’s Instagram account, where it was widely circulated.
There is a ban on photography at court sessions, and Sveland was charged.
Lied about her “finding” the picture
She defended herself by claiming that she had “found” the picture somewhere on the internet – it is unclear where – and that it was therefore taken by someone other than her.
However, the Stockholm district court dismisses this as an obvious lie and sentences Maria Sveland for violating the procedural code to 60 daily fines of SEK 400 (SEK 24,000 in total).
The falsely accused man told the trial that he felt “the noose around his neck” when he saw Sveland’s post on Instagram, and that the image had also been shared by celebrity feminist Cissi Wallin.
– I saw the picture but didn’t want to make another enemy in her, as she also had a large group behind her.
He therefore chose not to pursue the issue of defamation against Maria Sveland nor against Cissi Wallin for the publication.
