The recent developments in the conflict between Ukrainian and Russian forces near Bakhmut have revealed significant setbacks for Putin’s troops, with Ukrainian counter-attacks gaining momentum.
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, candidly admitted to the challenges faced by Russian forces, particularly on the flanks around Bakhmut. His remarks included mockery directed at Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, highlighting the dissatisfaction within Russian ranks.
While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky downplayed the extent of the counter-offensive, Prigozhin asserted that Ukrainian units were indeed making successful advances. Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maylar confirmed Ukrainian gains, emphasizing the losses suffered by the enemy.
However, Moscow has denied reports of Ukrainian counter-offensives, insisting that the frontline remains under control. Despite official statements, pro-Russian military bloggers have corroborated Prigozhin’s assessment, citing instances of Russian forces retreating and abandoning positions.
Anatoliy Shariy, a pro-Kremlin Ukrainian blogger, criticized the Russian army’s lack of resolve, pointing out instances of units deserting their posts. Similarly, Semen Pegov, a military blogger, suggested that Russian units were struggling to repel Ukrainian advances, signaling the beginning of a Ukrainian counter-offensive.
The Institute for the Study of War supported these claims, stating that Ukrainian forces were successfully pushing back Russian efforts around Bakhmut. They noted the deployment of low-quality Russian forces and suggested that Moscow had abandoned its objective of encircling Ukrainian forces in the area.
Russian war correspondent Anastasia Kashevarova provided insights into the challenges faced by Russian troops, attributing their losses to poor communication and internal conflicts. She described a breakdown in coordination between Wagner battalions and Russian regular army units, leading to inefficiencies on the battlefield.
Overall, the reports indicate a complex and challenging situation for Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, with Ukrainian counter-offensives posing a significant threat to their positions. The conflict continues to evolve, with both sides facing logistical, strategic, and organizational hurdles in the ongoing struggle for control.
