The sudden death of Pyotr Kucherenko, Russia’s deputy science minister, has sparked speculation and raised questions about its circumstances, especially given Kucherenko’s alleged private criticism of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Kucherenko, 46, fell seriously ill on a flight from Cuba to Moscow, prompting an emergency landing in southern Russia. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he passed away. While his family attributed his death to an underlying heart condition, an autopsy is scheduled to provide further clarity.

Independent journalist Roman Super claimed that Kucherenko had expressed private dissent regarding the invasion of Ukraine and had discussed plans to leave Russia for security reasons. Kucherenko reportedly expressed frustration over the invasion and the deteriorating situation in Russia.

The timing of Kucherenko’s alleged remarks, just before his sudden death, has raised eyebrows. Some observers have pointed to a pattern of high-profile deaths among Russians since the onset of the war in Ukraine, dubbing it ‘Sudden Russian Death Syndrome.’

Among those who have died under mysterious circumstances is energy boss Igor Shkurko, who was found dead in his prison cell after being accused of corruption. Viatcheslav Rovneiko, another prominent figure in the Russian oil industry, also died unexpectedly at his home.

Kucherenko’s marriage to Georgian Eurovision singer Diana Gurtskaya added to the intrigue surrounding his death. Gurtskaya, who has been involved in charity work for disabled people in Russia, received the prestigious title of ‘People’s Artist of the Russian Federation’ last year.

The circumstances surrounding Kucherenko’s death, combined with his alleged criticism of the Russian government’s actions, have fueled speculation and drawn attention to the broader climate of uncertainty and suspicion in Russia.
