Russia expressed significant concern and dismay following Ukraine’s successful interception of its hypersonic missiles, according to the UK’s Ministry of Defence. Ukraine, utilizing a mix of Soviet-era and modern air defense systems, reportedly shot down 18 Russian missiles, including six hypersonic ‘Kinzhal’ rockets. This development came after Russia’s drone and missile attack on Kyiv, which occurred shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s announcement of replenishing the country’s weapons arsenal.
The conflict escalated in May when Russia attempted to deploy its ‘Killjoy’ ballistic missile system against Ukraine’s air defenses. The first successful interception occurred on May 3, with subsequent engagements leading to the downing of Russian aircraft on May 13 in the Bryansk region. The Ministry of Defence highlighted the growing air threat along Russia’s border, causing concern for the Russian Aerospace Forces.
Despite Russia’s denial of Kinzhal missile failures, the United States admitted potential damage to its Patriot system deployed with Ukrainian forces due to a Russian missile strike on Kyiv. However, officials suggested the system could be repaired, emphasizing its continued operability. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu refuted Ukrainian claims of downing six Kinzhal missiles, questioning the accuracy of American missile defense systems.
Shoigu’s remarks underscored the Kremlin’s efforts to reassure the Russian public of the invincibility of its hypersonic arsenal. Russia’s significant missile bombardment of Kyiv purportedly targeted Ukrainian military positions and Western-supplied equipment. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov celebrated the interception of Kinzhal missiles using US-made Patriot systems, though Russian sources contested the effectiveness of the interception due to the Kinzhal’s speed and tactical approach.
