In the complex quagmire of the Ukraine conflict, Vladimir Putin finds himself ensnared in a “no-win situation,” according to James Olson, former director of counterintelligence at the CIA. The seasoned intelligence veteran believes that the war will persist unless the Russian president meets a grim fate – either being killed or ousted, rendering him a “dead man walking.” Olson suggests that Russian officials are teetering on the brink of turning against Putin across key departments crucial to the Russian war machine.

In an interview with the Sun, Olson, drawing on his 30 years of intelligence experience, painted a bleak picture of Putin’s predicament, stating that the war is “not going well at all” for the Russian premier. Olson warned that Putin’s obstinate pursuit of the invasion, despite its evident failures, would only exacerbate internal discord, eventually leading to his “removal from power.”

While Putin has enjoyed the support of Russia’s top officials throughout most of the conflict, Olson highlighted a “strong undercurrent of opposition” simmering within the Russian military, intelligence services, and among the oligarchs. The veteran intelligence analyst emphasized that this internal resistance could potentially culminate in a significant shift against Putin.

Russia’s struggle to maintain momentum in Ukraine is evident, with reports of Putin authorizing a new conscription push. A decree issued by the president aims to call up nearly one million recruits, as announced by Rear Admiral Vladimir Tsimlyansky of the General Staff. However, the response has been lackluster, with only 147,000 recruits called up, and none showing willingness to engage in the conflict in Ukraine.

The latest update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine underscores Russia’s failure to make significant headway. Despite Moscow’s attempts, Ukrainian forces launched counterattacks, deploying missile strikes, air raids, and rocket attacks in various locations. The attacks, including those in Druzhkivka, Donetsk Oblast, and other populated areas, failed to inflict significant damage on Ukraine’s military, leading to frustration among Russian generals.

Olson points out that these losses and setbacks in Ukraine have “disgusted” Russian generals, potentially becoming a catalyst for an uprising against Putin. In such a scenario, Olson envisions Putin as a “dead man walking,” asserting that he “would not survive that.” He concludes that, given the circumstances, it is more likely that Putin will be eliminated than face a military defeat in the ongoing conflict.
