Poland has begun constructing an electronic barrier along its border with the Russian-controlled Kaliningrad exclave. The barrier is being touted by Interior Minister Mariusz Kamiński as “one of the most advanced borders in the EU.” In November of last year, Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak announced the planned construction of a temporary barrier on the Polish-Russian border, and work began on the new security measures earlier this week.
According to Kamiński, the barrier will include day-and-night cameras and motion sensors that will allow for a full view of the border. The electronic work is expected to be completed by autumn. He further stated that the new barrier will make the Polish border “extremely well prepared for illegal crisis actions on the border with its eastern neighbors.”
The fence will be equipped with 2,000 camera poles, which will support a total of 3,000 cameras. Additionally, 700 kilometers of power, transmission, and detection cables will be installed on the barrier. “I believe this will be one of the best-prepared borders in the European Union,” said Kamiński.
The construction of the electronic barrier is a major step in Poland’s efforts to enhance border security and protect against potential hybrid threats from Kaliningrad.
