Ukraine War 4664637

A prominent anti-Putin activist has raised concerns that the Russian president is laying the groundwork for unleashing nuclear warfare in Ukraine as a twisted message to the global community. The activist, Andrey Sidelnikov, conveyed that Putin has been escalating nuclear rhetoric as part of his desperate efforts to dissuade Western leaders from providing modern weaponry to Ukraine’s army.

Putin’s ominous course of action began on February 21, when he declared the suspension of Moscow’s participation in the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between Russia and the United States, known as the New START Treaty. Signed in Prague on April 8, 2010, the agreement aimed to halve the number of strategic nuclear missile launchers.

During a rambling anti-Western speech to Russian MPs, Putin not only announced the suspension but also falsely claimed that Washington was contemplating breaking a three-decade-long moratorium on nuclear testing. Analysts quickly recognized this tactic as a Kremlin strategy to accuse others of what it intends to do.

Sidelnikov, a veteran former Russian politician and staunch Putin critic, offered a more alarming interpretation of Putin’s statements. He suggested that Putin’s mention of nuclear weapons testing hinted at plans to use tactical nuclear weapons on Ukrainian territory, particularly in areas annexed by Russia. According to Sidelnikov, Putin perceives these annexed regions as part of Russian territory, where nuclear weapons testing wouldn’t be deemed a war crime in his eyes.

The activist expressed deep concern over Putin’s apparent disregard for the people living in these territories, portraying them as insignificant in the Russian president’s eyes. Sidelnikov proposed that Putin might employ the threat of tactical nuclear weapons to coerce the West into accepting his conditions, with potential targets including London, Berlin, Washington, and other global locations.

Speaking during a conference of Russian opposition activists in Warsaw between February 20 and 23, Sidelnikov urged his compatriots to resist Putin’s regime through any means available. He emphasized the importance of leaving the country if possible, advocating for those who could fight to act as partisans. For those who feel unable to actively resist but reject collaboration with the regime, he encouraged them to nurture inner strength for future battles in restoring Russia as a democratic state.

Since Sidelnikov’s warning in February, Putin has further heightened tensions by announcing plans to deploy Russian tactical nuclear missiles in Belarus, underscoring the volatile and precarious nature of the geopolitical landscape in the region.
