A female victim turned the tables on a would-be phone thief when she fought back and threw him down a stairwell into the Paris metro this week, according to reports.
The harrowing incident unfolded just before 7 p.m. on Monday evening in the Porte de la Villette neighborhood of the French capital.
A 31-year-old woman was walking by an entrance to the subway when a suspect tried to snatch her cell phone.
“The thief was sitting on the railing of the stairs giving access to the metro,” a police source told Le Parisien.
The woman says she reacted instinctively, shoving the suspect away and causing him to fall down the stairs.
Emergency services were called to the scene where they found an injured 21-year-old male lying on the ground with an unidentified woman trying to help him.
He was taken to hospital where he was treated for ‘numerous traumas,’ including a broken leg.
The suspect was subsequently taken into custody and is expected to face an investigation when his health permits.
“Parisian public transport is undeniably the kingdom of thieves, often foreigners,” Le Parisien reports.
“According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, in 2021, 93% of non-violent thefts of the metro, trams and RERs were committed by non-national pickpockets.”
A heated debate over violent crime and lawlessness tied to mass migration has been raging in France.
Military leaders have fired off multiple incendiary letters in recent years, warning the Macron government of looming “civil war” if strong measures are not taken to regain control of a society spiraling into chaos.
