Deputy Head of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has intensified nuclear sabre-rattling, emphasizing that a Ukrainian attempt to retake Crimea could justify the use of nuclear weapons by Russia. This is not the first time the Kremlin has made such threats, with Medvedev criticizing the West and NATO allies, accusing them of attempting to dismantle Russia.
In an interview with Russian media, Medvedev stated that if Ukraine launches serious offensives related to retaking Crimea, the Kremlin would consider it a reason to use all means of retaliation, including those outlined in nuclear deterrence doctrine. He dismissed the notion that the threat of nuclear conflict has decreased, asserting that every day Ukraine receives foreign weapons brings the nuclear apocalypse closer.
Medvedev condemned the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on charges related to the alleged abductions of thousands of children from Ukraine. He deemed the warrant legally null and void, adding that it exacerbated the already strained relations between Russia and the West, which he described as the worst in history.
In response to German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann’s statement that Putin could be arrested in Germany on the ICC’s warrant, Medvedev warned that such an act would be considered a declaration of war against Russia. He hinted at potential retaliation against German assets, emphasizing the role of Russia’s nuclear forces as a strong deterrent during the conflict in Ukraine.
Medvedev questioned Ukraine’s sovereignty, suggesting that it is part of Russia due to geopolitical reasons and historical courses. His rhetoric is seen by observers as an attempt to align with Putin’s stance. Medvedev further dismissed the prospect of negotiations with the West, expressing contempt for Western politicians and alleging a “catastrophic drop in competence and elementary literacy of European Union leaders.” He concluded that it is useless to have talks with the West and that they only understand the language of force.
