At 8:04 p.m. (17:04 gmt) on Monday, the city of Defne in the Hatay province was struck by an earthquake that was felt powerfully in Antakya, the provincial seat, and Adana province, 200 kilometers (300 miles) to the north. Three minutes later, according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck.

The death toll in Turkey was increased to six on Tuesday by AFAD head Yunus Sezer, who also reported 294 injuries.

According to the state-run Anadolu news agency of Turkey, people in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt felt the tremors on Monday.

Six people were reportedly hurt in Aleppo by falling rubble, according to Syria’s state news agency SANA, while the mayor of Hatay said numerous structures had fallen and trapped people inside.

Hatay’s mayor, Lutfu Savas, said that a number of structures fell on Monday. According to Savas, people who were stranded are thought to have either gone home or were attempting to carry goods out of damaged homes.

Alejandro Malaver claimed that in the Turkish city of Adana, people ran from their homes and took blankets with them to their automobiles, many of which they intended to sleep in.

The Idlib and Aleppo provinces of Syria, which were also severely impacted by the earthquakes two weeks ago, reported several structures collapsing and interrupted electricity and internet services in certain areas. Several individuals were gathered in open spaces after fleeing their houses.

A number of patients were treated by the Syrian American Medical Society, which administers hospitals in northern Syria, including some who had heart attacks spurred on by terror.

Residents in northwest Syria were warned to heed instructions on how to react to earthquakes and evacuate buildings by the volunteer emergency response team known as the Syrian Civil Defence, which operates in opposition-held regions and goes by the name “White Helmets.”

According to the disaster management office, the dead toll in Turkey from the quakes two weeks ago increased to 41,156 on Monday, and more deaths were anticipated. In Syria, almost 6,000 people perished.

Several individuals are still unaccounted for, and it is believed that 385,000 apartments were destroyed or severely damaged.

The building of roughly 200,000 apartments in 11 earthquake-stricken counties will start next month, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
