In a CNN Town Hall, Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor to the Biden Administration, declared that Vladimir Putin has already lost the war in Ukraine. Sullivan emphasized that Russia’s objectives, including wiping Ukraine off the map, taking the capital, and absorbing Ukraine into Russia, have failed. He stated that Russia is not in a position to achieve these goals moving forward.
Despite Russia’s recent test of a nuclear-capable Satan II missile, which the US deemed a failure, Sullivan mentioned that there has been no change in Putin’s nuclear posture. During the town hall, a Ukrainian soldier named Yegor inquired about the possibility of increased US production and delivery of ammunition and weapons, including 155mm shells and HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System). Sullivan confirmed that the US is actively working to meet the demand and increase the production of these types of ammunition, emphasizing the significant effort and resources being devoted to this cause.
HIMARS, known for their long-range capabilities, have played a crucial role for Ukraine’s forces, allowing them to strike Russian command posts and ammunition dumps with precision over a distance of more than 50 miles. The system has proven effective in countering Russian attacks and depleting their artillery.
While both sides seem to be gearing up for a wider spring offensive, the West, including the US, UK, Germany, and other European countries, has pledged increased support. Training programs, including the use of main battle tanks, are underway to assist Ukraine in the offensive. The West’s commitment to supporting Ukraine has been demonstrated diplomatically, with President Biden recently visiting Kyiv in a show of solidarity with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The conflict, initially expected to be a 10-day offensive, has evolved into a year-long struggle with significant human costs on both sides, leaving Putin no closer to achieving his objectives.
