According to Channel 4 News, many Ukrainian women who have moved to cities like Birmingham find it difficult to adapt to areas characterized by more “diversity” than what they are used to at home in Ukraine.
Left Channel reporter Darshna Soni has spoken to a woman who hosted Homes for Ukraine, a scheme to arrange temporary housing for Ukrainian refugees.
The woman, who lives in a predominantly Muslim neighborhood of Birmingham, told a Channel 4 News reporter how a Ukrainian woman who lived with her and her young child complained that there were “too many Muslims” in the area.
– We were quite shocked by how difficult it was for her to deal with different cultures. Too many Muslims, too many people with different skin colors, says the host to Channel 4 News.
The Ukrainian woman’s child was enrolled in a local school where the majority of children were Muslim, prompting the refugee to tell her host that the child would not be safe there.
“The majority of my neighbors are Muslim, and they are wonderful people,” the host told Channel 4 News, adding that she urged her Ukrainian guest to give them a chance. However, the Ukrainian woman chose to move out prematurely.
Another Ukrainian woman, Oksana, says she moved “from the best area in Kyiv to the worst area in Birmingham” and admits she was “very scared because it wasn’t normal for me”.
The reporter lectures Oksana and explains that “a lot of people would be very offended” by her feeling unsafe in the area. However, Oksana responds by referring to police crime data and reported cases of Muslim terrorism.
Oksana has also moved from Birmingham to a new area, according to Channel 4 News.
