According to Rob Bauer, the head of the alliance’s Military Committee, if a direct battle between the two breaks out, NATO is ready to combat Russia.
Bauer answered categorically, “We are,” when asked in an interview with Portuguese RTP TV if the US-led military alliance is prepared for a direct clash with Russia.
The insider pointed out that NATO already had a number of combat units along its eastern border when hostilities broke out in Ukraine in February 2022. At their summit in Madrid in June 2022, the leaders of the bloc resolved to establish four new ones in Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, Bauer continued.
“I think that’s an important message for the Russians, that our posture has changed, to show them that we are ready if they would have an idea to come to NATO.”
The Russians breaching the border of our land in NATO, he noted, is the red line in terms of ties between Moscow and the military bloc.
According to Bauer, the Ukraine crisis had changed the game since many NATO countries had believed for many years that they were the ones who determined when and where to deploy their military. The official noted that since Russia began its military action “at the time of their choosing, we have to be much more ready, we have no time to prepare,” and that it was up to them to decide when they would arrive.
Additionally, he said that the Western arm transfers to Ukraine were “not escalatory.”
“The fact that your opponent has superior weapons, it’s not the enemy’s problem, that’s your problem,” he said, adding that NATO members need to discuss military production objectives. Both the West and Russia confront the need to step up efforts to create weapons and equipment. This calls for “talking about a wartime economy, but in peacetime,” which will be challenging, he conceded.
According to John Kirby, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council, Moscow has so far given Washington “absolutely no indication” that it intends to strike the territory of the alliance.
