Due to a missing capsule that was leaking a “reasonable” quantity of radiation, Western Australian (WA) authorities on Friday issued an emergency health notice. Andy Robertson, the senior health officer for Western Australia, encouraged people not to approach the object if they locate it.
“It serves as a source for both beta and gamma radiation. Therefore, if you come into touch with it or it’s close to you, you might suffer from skin damage, including skin burns, over time, Robertson explained. He also added that cancer is one of the long-term hazards associated with exposure to a source like this.”
The capsule in question is a tiny item that is less than the size of an Australian ten-cent coin at six millimeters length and eight millimeters high. It is said to have fallen from a truck that was moving on a route between a mine near the city of Newman and a depot in Perth, Western Australia, which is a city in the region’s south-west.
The capsule, which purportedly went missing on January 10, produces enough radiation to equal ten X-rays across a one-meter radius in an hour. That basically represents the annual exposure to natural radiation for each individual.
The capsule may be embedded in a tread, therefore authorities are advising all drivers who used the roadway after January 10 to check their tires. The item cannot be weaponized, according to Australia’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), but they advised people to keep at least five meters away from anything that resembles the capsule and to call them right away.
David Gill, chief superintendent of DFES Country North, stated on Friday that “the capsule remains unfound,” adding that looking for such a little item in a region with a circumference of more than 1,400 kilometers does provide “challenges.”
