U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the announcement that the United States will provide Ukraine access to Patriot missiles, its most advanced air defense system, just in time for Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky’s first foreign trip since his nation was invaded by Russia.
In a statement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that “today’s aid package includes for the first time the Patriot air defense system, capable of shooting down cruise missiles, short-range ballistic missiles, and aircraft at an altitude far beyond the reach of defense systems that have been provided to date.”
New military aid of $1.85 billion includes the Patriot air defense system. Of this, €850 million will be utilized for security support, while $1 billion will be used to give Ukraine “increased air defense and precision attack capabilities.”
In response to repeated Russian missile and drone strikes on the electricity and water supply network in the middle of winter, Zelensky earlier stated that he traveled to the United States to improve Ukraine’s “resilience and defensive capabilities.”
The U.S. disclosure came the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin presented his country’s 2023 military plan. Sergei Shigu, the minister of defense for Russia, declared that raising the military service age and expanding the size of the army were “essential.”
Russia has vowed to attack the Patriot missile systems and issued a warning that it will see them as legitimate military targets. However, it issued comparable warnings regarding the HIMARS systems that are now installed in Ukraine, and as of this writing, there have been no verifiable reports that Russia has succeeded in destroying any of the systems.
Although it is anticipated that the Patriot missile systems would be very successful in Ukraine, there are worries that they will be using a lot of pricey guided missiles against far less expensive Russian missiles. Security analysts say the United States is concerned that it does not have enough Patriot systems to adequately protect the Asia-Pacific area, particularly if China invades Taiwan.
Meanwhile, Zelensky’s choice to make his first trip outside to the United States rather than Europe infuriated Guy Verhofstadt, a former Belgian prime minister and significant socialist player inside the European Union.
Who to contact when you need Europe—even for a nation that wishes to join—clearly remains a mystery, according to Kissinger. Tweets from Verhofstadt.
He was alluding to the legendary American diplomat Henry Kissinger’s alleged remark, “Who do I contact if I want to call Europe?”
