The first domestically built diesel car with Euro-6 emissions technology has been launched by Iran Khodro Diesel Company (IKDC), the country’s largest producer of commercial vehicles.
Images of the Foton Tunland, a V-6 pickup truck with 235 horsepower that IKDC officials indicated will join the market in the following three months, were featured in local media reports on Sunday.
The truck is the first automobile produced in Iran that satisfies 85 additional standards established by Iranian standard bodies in addition to the most recent Euro 6 emission standard. Other cutting-edge technology including an automated transmission are included.
According to an IRIB news source, when manufacturing of the model is scaled up, the IKDC would produce 3,000 units of the Foton Tunland per month.
The launch comes amid claims that Iran’s domestic auto sector has experienced a significant boost since the beginning of the current calendar year in March.
According to statistics released earlier this week by Iran’s ministry of industries, the nation’s production of vehicles reached a five-year high of 122,000 units in the month of November 21.
In a study released last week, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) also noted that Iran’s production of automobiles increased 31.2% year over year in the nine months leading up to September 2022, totaling 949,817 vehicles.
The statistics come at a time when Iranian automakers are attempting to broaden their product lines and increase the number of indigenous parts they can produce.
After the United States imposed sanctions on Iran in 2018 and made it harder for domestic producers to get component supply from abroad, those attempts stepped up.
