After the fatal attack on a student on Monday in Illerkirchberg (Alb-Donau-Kreis), the background to the crime is still unclear. The suspect is a 27-year-old from Eritrea.

The investigators want to clarify as soon as possible how the attack could have happened and whether the suspect – a 27-year-old man from Eritrea – and the two girls knew each other beforehand. The man is still under guard and injured in the hospital. The police assume that he probably also injured himself with the knife.

The man lived in a refugee accommodation in the village. He is said to have attacked two girls, 13 and 14 years old, on the way to school on Monday morning with a knife. The 14-year-old later died in hospital as a result of the attack.

13-year-old seriously injured

The other girl, a 13-year-old schoolgirl, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to a police spokesman. The suspect came from an asylum accommodation and fled back there after the crime, the police said later. He and two other men were found there on Monday morning.

After the fact – an eyewitness saw a bleeding girl lying on the ground

An eyewitness reported to SWR that he had heard noises near a traffic light in the town south of Ulm in the morning. He then looked and “there was the girl bleeding on the floor with a huge stab wound in her stomach. A second had injuries below the chest, a stab wound. She was completely dissolved.”

The other two men were taken to the police station but were later released. A knife was also found that may have been used in the murder.

No motive for the attack on the student in Illerkirchberg

According to the police, it is still unclear why the girls were attacked. The police also emphasize that they are aware that events of this kind fuel fears and emotions. She therefore asks not to have any general suspicion against strangers, those seeking protection or asylum seekers, or to encourage or support such suspicions.
