Due to “an unacceptable risk” to US national security, Washington has prohibited the import and sale of new telecommunications equipment from the biggest manufacturers in China.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said in a statement on Friday that the ban applies to technological products produced by Chinese telecom giants Huawei and ZTE, as well as Dahua Technology, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology, and Hytera Communications, as well as those produced by their subsidiaries and affiliates.

“The FCC is dedicated to safeguarding our national security and is continuing its efforts here to ensure that unreliable communications equipment is not permitted for use within our borders. These new regulations are a crucial component of our ongoing efforts to safeguard the American people from telecommunications-related dangers to national security, according to FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel.

The organization added that the new rule is applicable to upcoming equipment import and sale permits. But it also said that it may cancel permissions that had already been issued.

In order to limit their access to the US market, the FCC included all five Chinese enterprises to its so-called “covered list” in March of this year. At the time, the FCC warned that Beijing may use the companies to spy on US residents.

ZTE, Dahua, Hytera, and the Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately reply to media demands for comment, while Huawei has so far declined to comment on the ban. The Chinese embassy, on the other hand, charged the FCC with “abusing state authority” and “maliciously assaulting” Chinese telecom firms earlier this year.
